Aurora Ancient Maps Ptolemy
Aurora Ancient Maps Ptolemy
Aurora celebrates with a new Limited Edition Collection
the Ancient Maps that have allowed Man to discover Uncharted Lands.
An Ancient Map reveals not only the hope of discovery,
passion for exploration, but also denotes how the world has been delineated
and revealed, up to what we know today.
Our journey through the ancient maps begins in the city
of Alexandria in Egypt once home to the grandiose Library where approximately
in 150 A.D. the geographer Claudius Ptolemy drew the first geographical map of the
known world, making use of a grid of geometric lines, corresponding to
to latitude and longitude.
When Ptolemy's work first appeared in
Europe revolutionised continental cartography. The traditional arrangement of the
medieval maps with the east at the top (from which the term orientation derives) was
replaced by the north-south axis, to which the modern grid was added
cartographic still in use today.
